“And you have the documents?”

“Papa must have—” Cameron cut herself off, realizing the futility of this conversation. Either Grant had the official documents in his possession or, God forbid, had destroyed them. The truth of the matter was that, without documentation, here in Mississippi Taye was nothing but another slave woman.

“Dear Miss Taye doesn’t accept my hospitality when it is offered,” Grant scoffed, “so she can just join the others.” He waved a ringed hand. “Lock her up with the other female house slaves.” He took his seat again.

Cameron made a move toward Taye as the ruffian tucked her under his arm to carry her off. Taye put out her hand to Cameron, tears running down her face.

“You take one more step toward that little ungrateful bitch,” Grant ground out, “and I will have you locked up with the rest of the whores.”

Cameron froze, her head spinning. Whores? Who was he calling a whore? Why was he pretending Taye was a slave? It was almost too much for her to absorb, but she had to stay strong. She had to remain strong for Taye and the others. She had to use her head. If Grant locked her up, she wouldn’t be able to do anything to help them. Tears glistened in her eyes as she kissed her fingers and offered her hand to her dear friend. “I’ll come for you,” she mouthed.

Taye pressed her lips together and nodded bravely.

Cameron watched in disbelief as the man carried her dearest friend away. Only when they were gone did she finally turn to her brother. Taking a moment to collect her thoughts and weigh her options, Cameron walked over to the edge of the veranda and picked up the hat she had tossed.

Grant had taken his seat at the table and was ladling jam onto a biscuit. “Will you join me to finish breakfast?” he asked as if none of that had occurred.

“No, I think not,” she said softly.

“Then go to your room. Begin packing your belongings. You will either catch the train north day after tomorrow or you will accompany me to Baton Rouge. No unwed sister of mine will remain behind, alone, without an escort.”

“Grant—”

“Another word,” he said sharply, “and I’ll nail your door shut as well.” He held up his fork. “Not another word.”

Cameron pressed her lips together and nodded solemnly.

She left the veranda and headed for her bedchamber. She had a lot to do if she was going to get the slaves off Elmwood tonight.

“So what you make of it?” Naomi asked Manu softly. They stood in the cover of trees behind Elmwood’s slave quarters staring at the doors and windows that had been boarded up. She could hear the frightened murmuring from inside the cabins.

“I don‘ know, sweetness. All I know is I got to get my black hide back to da plantation before I’s missed.” He rested a hand on her shoulder. “And if ya had any sense, ya’d be high-tailin’ it out of here.

Ya know the train path.
